About The North Valley Gaming Group

Overview
What is the North Valley Gaming Group?
The North Valley Gaming Group is a club that meets in Anthem, AZ each weekend to play specialty board and card games. We meet at the local public library twice a month, and the rest of the time at the home of Chris and Michelle.

Are there any membership dues?
There are no membership dues, and financial contributions are not necessary. You need only show up and play games!

Event Details
What days and times do you meet?
We game every Saturday from 1:00pm to 11:00pm. Members can game from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, 6:00pm to 11:00pm, or the entire day.

We also play Magic: the Gathering on the third Friday of the month from 7:00pm to 11:00pm.

Am I allowed to bring my child with to play games?
If your child is mature and can handle playing games with other adults, you are welcome to bring them to certain events. Game days where we meet at the library (first and third Saturdays) are good times to bring children, as the games played tend to be a bit lighter and the atmosphere less competitive. Afterwards we go out for pizza, and continue gaming at Chris and Michelle's house, and you are welcome to bring your child along.

On the non-library days (second, fourth and sometimes fifth Saturdays) I prefer to keep things adults only. Our Magic: the Gathering league is also an adults only event.

Food and Drinks
Are there snacks and drinks?
Plenty of snacks and drinks are provided each game session. Snacks include things such as Bugles, Chex Mix, trail mix, cookies, candy, etc. Drinks include soda (regular, diet and caffeine free), coffee, water and sometimes hot or iced tea.

We also break for dinner between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. During days when we meet at the library we go out to eat at Barros, where each person typically pitches in five bucks towards pizza. On days when we meet all day at Chris and Michelle's, dinner is served. Typical dinners include food such as Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Tacos or Chow Mein.

Do I need to bring anything?
You are not expected to bring anything, as I always have more than enough food and drinks.

Games Played
What types of games does the group play?
We primarily focus on Strategy Games such as Acquire, Agricola, Amun-Re, Cuba, Dominion, Hoity Toity, Power Grid, Princes of Florence, Puerto Rico, Roll Through the Ages, Settlers of Catan, Small World, Stone Age and Thurn and Taxis.

Equally popular are Train Games such as Chicago Express, Empire Builder, Railroad Tycoon, Ticket to Ride and Transamerica.

We also might play some Adventure Games such as Filthy Rich, Illuminati, Last Night on Earth and Talisman.

We also play a few War Games such as BattleLore, Conquest of the Empire, Heroscape, Here I Stand, History of the World, Memoir '44, Nexus Ops and War of the Ring.

We also play Magic: the Gathering once a month. We also schedule a monthly "epic" game such as Twilight Imperium or Civilization, both of which take an entire day to play.

I have never played games like these. Do you accept new players?
Yes! We always welcome new players, and every game is taught.

Should I bring my own game(s)?
You can if you want, but it is not required. We have over 100 games to choose from already, but if there is something you're interested in playing, bring it along.

How do you decide what games to play?
When we're at Chris and Michelle's, we determine what games to play as a group. Starting with all available games, each player in turn gets to decide on a game to eliminate from contention. Once we are down to only three games left, we play through as many of those three as possible in an order determined by majority vote.

When at the library we simply decide what games to play from those that people bring.
